Electromyography (EMG) Study

We offer in-office EMG and nerve conduction studies to help accurately diagnose nerve and muscle conditions. This is a non-invasive test that takes typically less than 15 minutes and is completely painless. These tests measure how well your nerves and muscles are working and can identify issues such as pinched nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, neuropathy, and other neuromuscular disorders.

Many patients are referred to us by chiropractors, primary care providers, and specialists for diagnostic EMG testing. The results help guide treatment decisions and ensure you receive the most appropriate care for your condition.

An example EMG on the Right Shoulder

This image shows a patient having an EMG (electromyography) and nerve conduction study performed on the right shoulder and arm. Small surface electrodes are placed on the skin, and a fine testing probe is used to measure how the muscles and nerves are working. The patient is seated comfortably, wearing a tank top so the shoulder area can be accessed while still maintaining modesty and comfort. The signals from the nerves and muscles are displayed on a monitor in real time, allowing the physician to evaluate how well the nerves are sending signals and how the muscles are responding.

What the Results Mean

An EMG and nerve conduction study helps us determine whether your pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling is coming from a nerve problem, a muscle problem, or both. Normal results show healthy nerve signaling and muscle activity. If there are abnormalities, it may indicate nerve irritation, nerve compression (such as a pinched nerve), or muscle involvement. These results help your doctor pinpoint the source of your symptoms and create a more accurate and effective treatment plan for you.
