Back Pain Q & A

What is back pain?

Back pain refers to any aching, discomfort, or stiffness that affects any part of the spine. Usually, it occurs due to an injury or underlying problem with your muscles, ligaments, nerves, or vertebrae.

Back pain affects everyone differently. Some people experience a persistent, dull ache; others experience sharp shooting or burning sensations that come and go. Regardless of your individual symptoms, if they last for longer than a week and fail to improve, it’s important to seek professional medical help.

What are some common causes of spine pain?

Back or spine pain occurs for various reasons, including:

  • Strained muscles
  • Herniated discs
  • Sciatica
  • Arthritis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Kidney infections
  • Degenerative changes to the vertebrae

You might also experience back pain due to a personal injury, like a slip-and-fall or automobile accident.

Does back pain always require a doctor’s visit?

Back pain typically isn’t a serious concern. Most of the time, it subsides on its own with rest, ice and heat therapy, or over-the-counter medication.

Even so, certain symptoms indicate a more serious problem. That’s especially true if your back pain occurs alongside a fever, numbness, and tingling, or unexplained weight loss.

How is back pain diagnosed?

At Pain Instacare, Dr. Gupta diagnoses back pain during a comprehensive in-office exam. During your appointment, he reviews your medical history and asks about your symptoms. Afterward, Dr. Gupta assesses your ability to stand and walk, tests your reflexes, and evaluates your spine’s range of motion.

If these measures don’t provide enough information to determine the source of your pain, Dr. Gupta might recommend additional screening procedures like X-rays, blood and urine tests, or a bone scan.

How is back pain treated?

At Pain Instacare, Dr. Gupta treats back pain using a combination of healthy lifestyle changes and minimally invasive interventional pain management techniques.

If your back pain is mild or moderate, he might recommend maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, drinking plenty of water, and eating a balanced diet. If these measures don’t provide relief, Dr. Gupta might recommend:

  • Epidural injections
  • Selective nerve root block injections
  • Facet joint injections
  • Medial branch blocks
  • Trigger point injections
  • Sacroiliac joint injections
  • Fluoroscopically-guided injections

The type of injection that will most benefit you depends on your age, health history, and the source of your discomfort.
